Psychological services are not covered by OHIP. Fees may be partially or fully covered by extended health benefit plans (e.g. Manulife Financial, Sunlife Financial, Great West Life). Please contact your insurance provider for further information about reimbursement. All psychological services are considered a tax-deductible medical expense.

The goal of a psycho-educational assessment is to identify a student’s strengths and weaknesses, so that these areas can be targeted through intervention or additional support. The assessment can help the child, parents, and teachers understand why he or she may be struggling academically and/or behaviourally.

If you notice your child struggling at school, a psycho-educational assessment may be valuable. Some children have difficulties learning how to read or putting their ideas into written format. Other children struggle to understand math concepts. These difficulties may be evident from an early age or may not appear noticeable until the child is older. Pay attention to your child’s behaviour, as it usually provides valuable information.

Some children have difficulty at school because they cannot sustain their attention at a level that is comparable to their peers. They may get in trouble at school for acting impulsively or being disruptive.

If you are receiving consistent feedback from teachers that your child is having academic and/or behavioural difficulties at school, you may wish to consider an assessment.

At the feedback meeting, you will leave with a clear sense of what to do next. It is your decision if you wish to share the information with your child’s school or family doctor.

It is up to the individual school to decide what accommodations they can provide. However, they are usually very interested in learning more about a child’s strengths and needs, which are outlined in a psychological report, and they try to implement what is feasible for them. They may be able to provide formal accommodations through an Individual Education Plan.

Some assessments are more lengthy than others. A psycho-educational assessment usually takes about a month, from the first testing session to the feedback meeting. A gifted assessment is much shorter, with results provided within 24 hours after the testing session.

Counselling appointments: Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice will incur a charge for the session. Providing us with 48 hours' notice allows us time to offer your appointment spot to someone else who may need it.

Assessment appointments: Please give at least 30 days' notice for cancellations. Cancellations made 10-29 days before the first testing session will incur a 20% charge of the assessment fee. Cancellations made 9 days or less before the first testing session will incur a charge of 60% of the assessment fee. Rescheduling due to illness will not result in any charge and will be accommodated to the best of our ability.
